Summary

Blicking Park is on the site of two medieval deer parks. These were enlarged in the 17th century and again in the 18th century, when Humphrey Repton and his son redesigned some parts of the park and the present lake was created.

Full description

Historic Parkland Grade II*.
On site of two medieval deer parks; extended 1616 and 1630 but reverted to parkland in late 17th century.
Minor details by Humphrey and J. A. Repton when massively increased in 18th century.
Reduced again in 19th century when parterre designed by Wyatt and Nesfield; redesigned in 1930 by Lindsay.
Parkland under restoration in 1990s.

According to the Head Forester in 1998, the avenue leading to the Mausoleum originally continued as a ride across the Great Wood as far as Woodgate; the Mausoleum was placed inside it. There are remains of a duck hide that was positioned as an artificial island in the centre of the lake.
