Record Details

NHER Number:17743
Type of record:Cropmark and Earthwork
Name:Earthwork bank

Summary

An earthwork bank which may relate to a boundary bank of a probable medieval to post-medieval date is visible on visualised lidar and has been recorded from field visits. It has been suggested that the bank is respected by a plantation shown on a map of 1721.

Full description

Bank, in wood.
From north, this appears as a curving bank about 1m high and about 200m long. Defending or enclosing the summit of the hill. But from the summit it seems as if this is an illusion caused by the natural contour of the hill, with only a short length of bank at the east end. The old plantation shown here on Corbridge's 1729 map (S1) seems to respect this bank.
National Trust spokeman [1] believes it to be a medieval deer park boundary, but there seems little evidence for this.
If it really is a bank it could be older.
Visited E. Rose (NAU) 17 November 1981.

An earthwork bank (not mapped) which may relate to a boundary bank (see above) of a probable medieval to post-medieval date is visible on visualised lidar data (S2). The possible boundary bank (centred at TG 1805 2886) visible on S2 may relate to the bank previously recorded from a field visit (see above) at this location. However, the bank section seen on S2 is shorter in length (measuring approximately 45m) than the bank described above. It is therefore possible that the bank recorded from S2 may relate to a separate feature. As the earthwork bank is clearly visible on recent (2017) visualised lidar data (S2), it is likely that the feature still survives as an earthwork.
The mapped extent of the Monument Record has been expanded from a point to reflect the location of the feature as on the visualised lidar data [2].
