Summary

Extensive metal-detecting at this location between 1986 and 2024 recovered a Neolithic/Bronze Age flint scraper; a collection of Late Iron Age to post-medieval pottery of mostly local forms; a Roman gaming piece made from a pottery sherd; Roman window glass; undated copper alloy casting waste; Iron Age, Roman, Middle Saxon and medieval to post-medieval coins; medieval and post-medieval jettons and tokens and a range of other, undated and Iron Age to post-medieval metal objects. These metal finds include undated sheet copper alloy unidentified objects, a copper alloy stud and an iron stud; a Late Bronze Age copper alloy awl and copper alloy tanged chisel; an Iron Age La Tène I brooch; Late Iron Age brooches; Late Iron Age/Roman brooches and a zoomorphic bucket mount; a Late Iron Age to Early Saxon pennanular brooch; Roman brooches, bracelet fragments, furniture fittings, pairs of tweezers, finger rings, hair pins, needles, nail cleaners, pins, mounts, a spoon, spatula probe, possible speculum fragment, toilet spoon, harness pendant, bell, lock, possible vessel handle lug, copper alloy studs, copper alloy nail and copper alloy bead; a potentially Roman unidentified copper alloy object; Roman/Early Saxon tweezers; a Roman to Late Saxon unidentified gold object; Early Saxon brooches, wrist clasps (including a lead example that may be a production model), girdle hangers, various mounts, spangles, a strap end, buckle, probable neck ring or necklet, sword pommel, shield mount, hoop or mount for a bucket, probable bucket handle and gold and garnet cloisonné mount or stud; Early/Middle Saxon buckles, strap fittings, tweezers, a strap end, ear scoop, mount, shield stud and chain link; Middle Saxon brooches, tweezer fragments, pins, stylus and stylus or styliform pin; Middle/Late Saxon hooked tags (one silver), strap ends, mounts, pins, tweezers, a finger ring and spoon; Middle Saxon to medieval whittle tang knives and a whetstone; Late Saxon stirrup-strap mounts, hooked tags, other dress accessories and a hoard of three silver ingots or hacksilver fragments; several potentially Saxon unidentified copper alloy objects; a Late Saxon/medieval scabbard chape and a large collection of medieval to post-medieval dress accessories and other objects.
Although the quality of items found is not unusual the total number of finds is notably large. The whole assemblage is indicative of Late Iron Age activity, a large Roman to early medieval settlement and Early Saxon cemetery complex spread over a wide area including NHERs 3565, 11743, 11816, 30690, 30754 and 31073. A Roman villa (NHER 3560) has previously been identified within this field, and a Roman hoard comprising a copper alloy and iron cauldron containing two pottery vessels was recovered during metal-detecting.

The range of material at this site is strongly indicative of a cemetery assemblage and includes artefact groups such as girdle hangers, shield mounts, disc brooches, square headed brooches, cruciform brooches, equal arm brooches, wrist clasps and buckles. A single coin, a Burgundian gold tremiss of Goedmar, may equally represent settlement or burial related activity. Although there are no distinct patterns which would indicate separate burial foci with certainty, there seem to be two broad concentrations of finds. The first is located at the southwest limit of the site, and merges into another scatter immediately to the north. No chronological distinction can be made between these different concentrations; finds date from the 5th century (equal arm brooch) to the 7th century (2 buckles) in the northern concentration, and the 5th (finger ring) to 7th/8th century (toilet implement and buckle frames) in the southern concentration. Interestingly, functional differences may be tentatively indicated by the recovery of a melted side-knob from a cruciform brooch, indicating a mid-6th century cremation in the southern concentration. This find could perhaps provide a context for some of the Early Saxon pottery in this area. There are very few finds from west of the eastern boundary of the site, suggesting that concentrated activity may not have extended further westwards. Middle Saxon metalwork is more widely distributed than Early Saxon metalwork, extending east to the probable Roman villa (NHER 3560), and north beyond the spring-line. Metal artefact loss ends c. 300m north of the southern extent of the site and does not continue beyond the eastern extent. The main concentration of artefacts is still to be found towards the western edge of the site, in an area c.150m in diameter, towards the centre of the field. Recovered artefacts are mostly personal metalwork and include numerous pins (8th century), strap ends (9th century), fewer hooked tags, and a strap fitting. Six Middle Saxon coins have been recovered within this concentration, indicating a discrete focus of trade and exchange. The coin and metalwork assemblage indicates a multifunctional occupation focus with a heavy trade and exchange presence. A relative lack of functional metalwork, without supplementary fieldwork, might suggest a weak permanent settlement presence.
