Summary
Metal-detecting and fieldwalking between 1984 and 2017 recovered a large number of Roman finds, including coins, pottery, building material, brooches, bracelet fragments, hair pins and other metal objects. The number of items found indicates this was an area of settlement within the Roman town of Walsingham and Wighton (NHER 40825). Most evidence for activity dates to the late 2nd to 4th century AD. The high proportion of imported pottery fragments indicates this may have been a site of some importance. A range of other finds dating from the prehistoric to post-medieval period have also been found including prehistoric worked flints, including Mesolithic/Early Neolithic blades and flakes; prehistoric, Iron Age, Middle Saxon, medieval and post-medieval pottery sherds; post-medieval malting kiln flue tile fragments; medieval and post-medieval coins; post-medieval tokens and Iron Age, Roman Early Saxon to post-medieval metal objects. The metal finds include an Iron Age brooch; Roman stud, hair pin, and furniture fitting; Early Saxon brooches, sleeve clasps, a buckle, unidentified object, tweezers and vandyke from a bucket; a Early/Middle Saxon chatelaine fragment; a Middle Saxon pin and a ring formed out of the bottom of a pin shank; a ?Late Saxon suspension loop; a Late Saxon/medieval strap-end; medieval to post-medieval dress accessories; medieval spindle whorls, a harness suspension loop, harness hook, nail, unidentified object, furniture fitting, lead window came fragment, horse harness pendant, ampulla and rowel spur; medieval/post-medieval lead weights, copper alloy vessel fragments, a candlestick fragment, and a pin; and post-medieval Jew's harps, crotal bells, harness mounts, a lead weight, copper alloy weight, nesting cup weight, casket key, hinge plate and furniture mount.
