Summary
This site has been subject to extensive investigations since the 1970s. Ploughing has uncovered the remains of a Roman bathhouse and other buildings, all of which were probably part of a small town. The presence of numerous Roman coins and metal objects also suggest that metalwork objects were being produced here.
Metal-detecting between 1979 and 2017 has also recovered Late Prehistoric lithic implements; Roman pottery; Iron Age, Roman and Late Saxon coins and undated and Bronze Age to post-medieval metal objects. The metal objects include undated copper alloy casting waste and a grotesque bust of a man; a Bronze Age awl and flat axehead; numerous Roman objects, including brooches, furniture fittings, a neck ring, hair pin, locking bolt, stud, harness mount, unidentified object, harness mount and a military harness mount; Early Saxon tweezers, brooches, girdle hanger fragments, wrist claps hook plate and hanging bowl fragment; an Early/Middle Saxon buckle; a Middle Saxon pin and strap-end; a Middle/Late Saxon brooch; a Late Saxon bit link or harness link fragment; Late Saxon/medieval stirrup-strap mount; medieval to post-medieval dress accessories; scale tang knife end caps; a medieval brooch, furniture fitting, casket key, scabbard chape, thimble and an unidentified object; medieval/post-medieval copper alloy vessel fragments, a "paper-clip" rivet, pin, dress fastener, lead weight, and book mount and post-medieval clapper bell fragments, harness mounts, furniture mounts or escutcheons, a thimble, sword belt mount, crotal bell, copper alloy weight and a Jew's harp.
