Record Details

NHER Number:24254
Type of record:Find Spot
Name:Multi-period finds and Early Saxon cemetery

Summary

Metal-detecting between 1987 and 2013 recovered Roman pottery sherds; Late Iron Age, Roman and medieval coins; medieval and post-medieval tokens; a post-medieval jetton and undated, Bronze Age, Roman, Early Saxon and medieval metal objects. The metal finds include a Late Bronze Age socketed axehead; a Roman buckle, brooch, finger ring and strap fitting; Early Saxon brooches, buckles, a knife, strap fitting and unidentified object and medieval dress accessories and a bronze leather stamp.
The number of Early Saxon finds plus undated lumps of melted copper alloy suggest that this is the site of an Early Saxon cremation cemetery.
