Record Details

NHER Number:21137
Type of record:Monument
Name:Roman building, Early Saxon cemetery and multi-period finds

Summary

Fieldwalking and metal-detecting between 1985 and 2013 has recovered a large number of finds dating from the Palaeolithic to the post-medieval period. These include an Upper Palaeolithic flint scraper, an Iron Age brooch, a large number of Roman finds (including pottery fragments, brooches and coins), a large number of Early Saxon items (including pottery, brooches, a spearhead, wrist clasps and human remains), medieval coins, jettons, tokens and other metal objects and undatable copper alloy casting waste. The Roman remains suggest this was the site of a Roman building. In the Early Saxon period this was the site of a cremation and inhumation cemetery.
