Name:Site of Iron Age settlement and Roman camp

Summary

This is the site of an Iron Age settlement and a Roman marching camp, visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs. Pottery fragments dating from the late prehistoric to the post medieval period, as well as prehistoric flints, Roman coins and building material and medieval roof tile have been found by fieldwalking and metal detecting.

10 November 1983. Context 1. Very poor conditions. Found within 5m of each other. Site 109.
1 sherd Roman with ?roulette decoration greyware.
2 sherds probably Roman greyware.

February 1983. Context 3, formerly numbered NHER 11975 Context 4, BB 6.
Continuation of NHER 11975 Context 3 across track;
Predominance of 2nd to 4th century pottery including 3rd century bead and flanged bowl, and 1 coarse East Anglian colour coated.

Roman sherds including shelly ware, mortaria, amphorae, flagon, samian, Nene Valley, oxydised, and colour coated; Roman imbrices and tegulae; lava quern.

Barbarous radiate 270 to 280s, identified by A. Gregory (NAU)
Copper alloy Roman bucket handle, metal detecting find.
Prehistoric sherds and flints.
Bronze Age sherd.
Iron Age sherds including concentration with bone.
Beaker sherd.
Late Saxon Thetford type ware.
Medieval sherds including Grimston, Late medieval/early post medieval, roof tile, proto Santoinge stoneware.

Cropmarks of rectangular enclosure, continuing into site NHER 23916, and several subrectangular markings to south. Interpreted as Roman marching camp and possible Iron Age settlement.
