Record Details

NHER Number:5745
Type of record:Monument
Name:Site of possible Bronze Age round barrow, Gallows Hill

Summary

This one of two mounds that stood on Gallows Hill (see also NHER 5744). It may have been a Bronze Age round barrow. By the early 20th century it had been heavily eroded and by the 1970s no longer survived as an earthwork. An 18th century map marks a set of gallows atop one of the two mounds, hence the name Gallows Hill.

E. Bales (NMP), 19 Jan 2011.

August 2014. Field visit.
This barrow mound did not survive as an earthwork when the adjacent barrow (NHER 5744; S4) was excavated in the 1970s. After these excavations, a landscape mound was created on the site. The removal of some of this landscape mound prior to 20 August 2014 may have removed below ground remains associated with this barrow.
D. Robertson (HES), 11 September 2014.

September 2014.
A re-examination of the available aerial photographs suggests that two possible mound features may be visible as parchmarks on photographs from 1946 (S5) (J.Albone pers.comm.). These may relate to the round barrows NHER 5744 and 5745 but it was not possible to be certain of this.
E. Ford (NMP), 03 Sept 2014.
