Summary

Metal-detecting and fieldwalking between 2003 and 2011 recovered a range of finds including undatable prehistoric, Mesolithic, ?Early Neolithic and Late Neolithic worked flints; Roman and post-medieval pottery; post-medieval tiles; an Iron Age glass bead; Iron Age and Roman coins and a number of other metal objects. The metal finds include a Roman hair pin, a Middle Saxon ?dress fastener, a medieval harness pendant and the finger loop from a pair of post-medieval scissors or candle-snuffer.

Full description

June-July 2003. Metal-detecting in area around 40m across.
1 Late Neolithic flint oblique arrowhead.
1 Iron Age coin (gold plated), 1 glass bead and 1 brooch (Colchester one-piece).
1 Roman coin.
1 Middle Saxon ?double-hooked fastener fragment.
1 medieval horse harness pendant and 1 buckle frame fragment.
1 post-medieval token.
1 undatable copper alloy casting jet.
The Iron Age coin and glass bead were subsequently donated to the Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2010.190.1-2).

1 post-medieval token, 1 jetton, 1 bar mount and 1 buckle.

6-13 June 2010. Fieldwalking.
Systematic, gridded fieldwalking. Finds recovered included:
46 undatable prehistoric flint flakes, 2 blades, 1 microblade, 4 shatter pieces, 1 knife, 1 saw/knife and 1 scraper. No diagnostic material but indications of Early Neolithic, especially near southern edge of plot.
2 Roman pottery sherds (greyware).
6 post-medieval pottery sherds (Westerwald and salt-glazed stoneware, Glazed Red Earthenware and Staffordshire combed slipware) and 5 floor tiles/pamments.

Also spread of Roman pottery (16 greyware sherds) at [1], 15m diameter. A concentration of worked flints was recovered during the investigation of this spread:
1 ?Late Mesolithic/Early Neolithic core trimming flake, 1 retouched flake, 2 blades and 5 flakes. No clear indicators but suggestions of Late Mesolithic/Early Neolithic.
