Summary

Since the 1970s Roman pottery sherds, tile and building remains have been recovered in this area, and it is thought that this may have been the site of a Roman building (NHER 64782). Metal detecting and fieldwalking between 1989 and 2017 recovered a Mesolithic to Bronze Age perforated "mace-head", a Neolithic scraper, a Neolithic/Bronze Age flake, a Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age plano-convex knife; a Late Iron Age/Roman puddingstone quern fragment; and Roman window glass fragments and flue tile; Late Iron Age, Roman and Early Saxon/Middle Saxon pottery sherds, Roman imbrex, flue tile, tegulae, tile and window glass fragments; Late Iron Age/Roman and Roman coins, post-medieval tokens; and Late Iron Age to Early Saxon and medieval to post-medieval metal objects. The metal finds include a Late Iron Age/Roman nail cleaner; Roman brooches, finger rings, a silver stud or nail, and a bracelet; Early Saxon brooches and an undientified object; a medieval cauldron fragment, brooch pin, buckle, and spur; and a post-medieval mount.
