Record Details

NHER Number:37049
Type of record:Monument
Name:Earthworks of undated parish and warren boundary and enclosures, Stonyhill Breck

Summary

During 2000-2002 the Rapid Identification Survey recorded the presence of a parish and warren boundary and enclosures on this site. The boundary consisted of a multiple banked feature, usually two or four parallel banks, and is shown as a trackway on some early maps. Mostly to the west and within Sturston are a series of rectangular and rectilinear banked enclosures, which are thought to be stock enclosures on uneven ground, although they are small enough to be arable fields.

Full description

2000-2002. Woodland Earthwork Rapid Identification Survey.
Stoneyhill Breck. Management Unit L1, Site 115:
Parish and warren boundary and enclosures. The parish and part-warren boundary along the eastern edge of most of the site is a multiple bank feature, usually two or four parallel banks, and is shown as a trackway on early maps.
Mostly to the west and within Sturston are a series of rectangular and rectilinear banked enclosures extending for 250m from the track on grassland. A linear double ditch aligned northeast to southwest crosses these features. The enclosures are thought to be stock enclosures on uneven ground, although they are small enough to be arable fields.
