Record Details

NHER Number:32695
Type of record:Monument
Name:Possible site of World War Two spigot mortar emplacement

Summary

This is the reported location of a World War Two spigot mortar emplacement, although no surviving remains were identified during a survey undertaken in 1994. This led to the suggestion that it had most likely been destroyed, although it is possible that its location had been inaccurately recorded.

Full description

April 1994. Norfolk Defensive Structures Survey. Survey No. Q3-10.
Location of a World War Two spigot mortar emplacement which once covered Nuns' Bridges.
No remains could be identified during the survey. The structure has therefore possibly been demolished.
See (S1) for further details.
D. Walker (NLA) August 1996.
Updated H. Hamilton (NLA), 03 July 2008.

It is possible that the reported location of this spigot mortar emplacement was inaccurate. It should be noted that an extant spigot mortar emplacement has now been confirmed to lie approximately 125m to the north-west (NHER 67112), which much better fits the description of 'covering Nuns' Bridges'. This is one three extant spigot mortar emplacements in the vicinity of Nuns' Bridges - all of which lie in much closer proximity to the Nuns' Bridge Road (the others being NHERs 67110 and 67111).
