Name:Iron Age and Roman features and possible Roman building at Dunston Hall golf course

Summary

Excavation in 1996 recorded a possible Roman trackway leading towards a known Roman road. In addition a pit and postholes, possibly forming palisades and/or building, were noted in conjunction with much Roman pottery. A number of Roman tiles and tesserae were also recovered. Further work in September to December 1996 revealed Iron Age and Roman pits, postholes, ditches and features, as well as Neolithic and Mesolithic flints.

Full description

April 1996. Systematic Fieldwalking and Metal-detecting Survey.
Field survey in advance of possible golf course extension.
Large scatter includes NHER 20533, NHER 9754.
Prehistoric flint flakes and some scrapers and retouched pieces.
Post-medieval pottery sherds.
Copper alloy tag or strap end.

June-July 1996. Trial Trenching.
