Full description

May 1975. Excavation.
Norwich Survey excavation on site owned by Norwich School.
Site dug to (a) check line of Holme Street and (b) Late Saxon settlement round Tombland.
Excavation showed that Holme Street did not cross the site and it is now thought that the 1107 to 1318 street line must have passed to the south of the excavation.
(b) There were no Middle Saxon or Late Saxon features although some residual pottery was recovered.
The excavation produced evidence of a probable 11th to 12th century hall and the northern end of the early 14th century Carnary College.
J. P. Roberts.
See file for further details.

Excavations above revealed a scatter of Middle Saxon pottery and possible features, but with intensive occupation of the site probably dating only from the 11th century, and probably associated with the establishment of the Prior's Fee in the late 11th to 12th centuries.
