Name:Roman and post medieval pottery sherd concentration

Summary

Fieldwalking in 1983 recovered a number of Roman, medieval and post medieval pottery sherds, as well as noting a concentration of Roman and post medieval pottery, shell and bone. Two Roman coins have also recovered from the same are as this concentration.

Full description

5 December 1983. Partly rough ploughed and weathered field, part winter wheat. (S1)
Context 1 odd sherds of medieval and Roman pottery over field (Roman derived from context 2). TSJ AF. (S2)
Context 2 at 5304 1268 sparse concentration of Roman pottery over large area, also sparse post medieval pot, moderate amount fired clay, very sparse animal bone. Much of Roman small abraded and generally coarse colour
here than elsewhere. At least 140m east to west x 100m north to south at 1.83m OD. TSJ 7. (S3)

Sestertius 1st-2nd century AD probably Antoninus Pius or Marcus Aurelius. AD 138-61 reverse depicting a female standing.
Sestertius, probably late 3rd century.
Both in poor condition. Identified by A. Gregory (NAU).

Roman greywares, predominantly Nar Valley.
Roman shell-gritted including large storage jars and South Midlands wares. Nene valley colour coated 2nd-4th century Central Gaulish. 2nd-4th century range, possibly starting towards end 4th century.
Medieval greenglazed strap handle, probably Grimston.
