Name:Roman coin hoard and multi-period objects

Summary

Metal detecting in the early 1980s recovered a dispersed hoard of 300-400 Roman coins, mostly of Postumus, but including examples minted by Gallienus and Hostilian. Subsequent fieldwalking in the same area recovered sherds of Roman and medieval pottery, briquetage, animal bones, shell fragments and fired clay. In addition, several roddons of unknown date were noted in the area.

Full description

'Six or seven years before 1989'. Found with metal detector.
Dispersed hoard of 300-400 antoniniani, mostly Postumus, but including Gallienus and Hostilian.
Informant is certain this is not derived from or confused with NHER 2388 or NHER 2389.
Found by 'someone from the Weeting area'.

18 February 1983. Fenland fieldwalking.
Context 1: Odd sherds medieval pottery over field.
Context 2: at [2]. Over whole roddon. 60m northwest to southeast x 45m northeast to southwest at 2.1m (7ft) OD.
Roman sherds, not particuarly dense.
Odd bit of briquetage.
Some bone and shell.
Context 3: at [3]. Area approximately 20m + northwest to southeast x 12m northeast to southwest, 1.8m (6ft) OD.
Small patch Roman pottery.
Odd bits of fired clay and briquestage on top of small roddon.
Also includes one Late Saxon sherd.
Context 4: at [4]. 120m north to south x 60m east to west at 1.8m (6ft) OD.
Large scatter Roman sherds, but abundant but over several roddons. Some animal bone, shell, briquetage, fired clay.
Slight soil discolouration.
Context 5: at [5]. 65m northwest to southeast x 25m northeast to southwest at 1.8m (6ft) OD.
Scatter of Roman pottery, fired clay, bone on top of an on east side of small roddon.
No obvious soil discolouration.
