Record Details

NHER Number:18493
Type of record:Monument
Name:World War One pillbox to north of Acle New Road, Great Yarmouth

Summary

A World War One polygonal pillbox still stands less than 100m to the north of New Road, Great Yarmouth (the A47). It has been visited on the ground and is also visible as an extant building on aerial photographs. It stands on a pre-existing mound (NHER 4322) and was clearly built at this location to take advantage of the mound’s height. It is one of two such pillboxes (the other is recorded as NHER 18494) which lie on either side of the road and were presumably sited to control access along it.

Full description

November 1982. Visit. North side of Acle New Road. Formerly part of Reedham Parish.
Pill box, polygonal, concrete. On small mound amongst trees (origin of mound?).
E. Rose (NAU), 4 November 1982.

(S1) states that this pillbox dates from World War One.

A. Gregory (NAU) notes that in 1987 the owners of Ashtree Farm believes that this pillbox sits on a mound that was the medieval saltern excavated by Larwood etc, and not NHER 4322. See that number for discussion.
E. Rose (NAU), 11 December 1987.

1992.
This pill box stands on mound NHER 4322; location was incorrect. Corrected 1992.
E. Rose (NLA).

The original roadline here had two right angled bends.
See (S2).
D. Gurney (NLA), 17 November 1996.

February 2006. Norfolk NMP.
NMP mapping has led to the alteration of the central grid reference of the site from TG 5053 0901 to TG 5053 0902.

The World War One polygonal pillbox described above is visible as an extant structure on aerial photographs, e.g. (S3). It could have been reused during World War Two but there is no clear evidence of this on the consulted aerial photographs, e.g. (S4).
S. Tremlett (NMP), 9 February 2006.
