Record Details

NHER Number:28277
Type of record:Monument
Name:Neolithic flint production site

Summary

During stripping of the topsoil for drainage a Neolithic scraper, notch and flakes and fragments of Iron Age, Roman, medieval and post medieval pottery were found. The Neolithic flints suggest this was a Neolithic flint production site. A small number of additional worked flints were recovered during the installation of a new sewer pipe in 2015. No archaeologically-significant features or deposits were recorded, although it should though be noted that soil deposits were not necessarily fully removed (so any remains present may not have been exposed).

D. Gurney (NAU), 30 November 1990.

May-June 2015. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of groundworks associated with installation of Norwich Research Park South Development Gravity Foul Sewer (Field D).
No archaeological remains were recorded during the stripping of topsoil and subsoil deposits from the pipeline easement in this field. It should though be noted that these deposits were only removed down to the level required by the project - it is therefore possible that archaeological features were obscured by areas of surviving subsoil.
Unstratified finds were limited to a small number of Mesolithic/Early Neolithic worked flints.
Information from report uploaded to OASIS. HER copy awaited.
The archive associated with this work has been deposited with Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCH : 2017.600).
