Summary

Fieldwalking before the construction of Gillingham bypass recovered fragments of medieval and post medieval pottery. A Late Saxon iron socketed axehead and the handle of 13th to 14th century jug were found during construction of the road.

Full description

2 April 1980. On line of bypass.
Low cereal crop.
Occasional medieval and post medieval sherds.
Found by A. Rogerson (NAU).

30 April 1980. Walked again after topsoil stripped.
No features, no finds.

Early 1981. Found in constructing road between chains 600 and 700.
Iron T shaped socketed axe, Late Saxon to mid 14th century date.

September 1982. Found in soil dumped on site NHER 19150, excavated from making new footbridge opposite Catholic Church.
13th/14th century unglazed jug handle/rim sherd.
