Summary
Fieldwalking and metal detecting in advance of the development of the bypass recovered
Roman pottery and coins, medieval metalwork (including a coin) and post medieval pottery and metalwork. A section of a ditch containing Late Saxon to medieval pottery was observed. The site was fieldwalked as part of the Fenland Survey. The two concentrations of finds recovered were interpreted as evidence for Late Saxon to medieval settlement and a medieval rubbish dump in the fen.

Full description
1978. Found with metal detector and fieldwalking bypass line.
Roman pottery and coins, medieval metalwork, post medieval pottery and metalwork.
1979. Seen in ditch section.
Ditch with Late Saxon to medieval pottery.
Pre 1980. Found with metal detector.
Medieval coin, post medieval weight, Late Saxon to medieval pottery.
1987. Fenland fieldwalking. HLG 6 and 7.
Late Saxon, medieval sherds, bone, shell.
At HLG 6 there are copious pottery fragments set in grey stained soil lying next to the lane. The material includes Thetford Ware and may indicate an origin for the site in the Late Saxon period, continuing into the 13th century. Another spread of medieval pottery (HLG 7) in the same field is less easy to explain in settlement terms, for it must have been perilously close to the contemporary fen edge. Possibly this was rubbish dumped in the fen in the late 12th and 13th centuries.
See (S1) and (S2).
Pottery lists and (S3) in file.
