Summary

Work here during the early 1960s and late 1980s recovered a diverse range of objects and pottery sherds, dating from the Neolithic to post medieval period. Finds of note included a Middle Saxon strap end with an animal head terminal, a post medieval farthing of James I or Charles I, sherds of medieval green glazed earthenware pottery and a Neolithic flint punch.

Full description

1961. Surface finds of Roman pottery.

1962. Excavation of site.
This excavation produced further pottery finds, mainly from the layer between the ploughsoil and the sandy subsoil.

1963. Excavation of dark circular soilmarks.
This produced further Roman sherds and fired clay. Late 1st to 2nd century vessels were found nearby, along with Nidermendig lava fragments and part of an iron blade.

1987. Fieldwalking of Beeches Barnfield.
Late Saxon, medieval and Roman finds.

1989. Fieldwalking.
Two flint flakes, one with retouch.
Two ?Roman pottery sherds.
Medieval or post medieval wattle-marked daub.
Iron slag.
