Full description
September 2005. Norfolk NMP.
Earthworks and cropmarks of a possible medieval toft or croft are visible on aerial photographs (S1). These remains are centred on TG 4784 1225. A roughly north to south aligned earthwork platform measuring 45m wide by 110m long was centred on TG 4785 1229. It had a straight southern side along a field boundary that was extant in 1946. Its northern end was rounded, respecting the alignment of the adjacent roads. The platform was flanked on either side by narrow ditches. These were present as earthworks alongside the platform in the pasture field. The ditches were also seen to continue as cropmarks for up to 127m in an arable field to the south. The proximity to Mautby church strongly suggests that this platform is likely to relate to a medieval toft or croft. The pasture field had been ploughed and the earthworks levelled, by 1970 (S2).
