Summary

A post-medieval earthwork bank was observed during a survey carried out by the NAU in 2000. The bank dates to the 18th century, and functioned as a dam, with a brick culvert at one end, to contain and control the water level in the nearby lake.

Full description

2000. Field Observation and Desk-based Assessment.
Site identified during archaeological assessment of Holkham Estate.
A long bank to the north of the coast road, following the outline of the north end of the lake, about 800m towards the east end a culvert passes under the bank, doubtless the original sluice and control of the lake water.

Archaeological Earthwork Rapid Identification Survey of Holkham Estate woodland.
This earthwork dam was observed during an examination of the area immediately to the south (The Stews). It is c.9m wide, 2.5m high and flanked on each side by drainage channels, into which water from the lake is directed.
