Summary

This is the site of Sutton deserted medieval settlement. It is listed in the Domesday Book of 1086, and is referred to as Sutton Green in 1579, but by the end of the post medieval period had been deserted. Only faint earthworks of some banks can be seen today.

Site of Sutton Deserted Medieval Settlement (Suttuna in Domesday, Sutton Green in 1579).

At 8966 2065. Excavations for footings of new stable on approximate site of building marked on map of AD 1590.
One deep feature, undatable, noted; two medieval coarseware sherds from spoilheap.

The whole area south of minor road is under arable. There are slight variations in levels, especially to west. To west of High House Farm buildings, a raised bank approx. 40cms high, 2-3m wide runs towards Church. There is a slight ditch on its west side. A small area south of Beck Street is within a private garden north of road. South of poultry houses, field planted with mixed deciduous and coniferous trees.
