St Peter Parmentergate is a large church, built on a sloping site. It stands just below the Castle and above the Cathedral, on the end of King Street closest to Market Avenue. A large part of this building dates to the 15th and 16th centuries, and like many of the urban churches, is of flint with stone and brick dressings. The church has been redundant since 1981.
The building itself has both nave and chancel, with a high west tower, south porch and a vestry, which due to the sloping site is reached by twelve steps up from the churchyard. The east window on the north side of the nave is partly blocked by a semi-octagonal rood turret of around 1510, and the chancel dates to the same period. Inside can be seen the tomb of Richard Berney, dated 1623, as well as a Victorian screen to the chancel which has reset 15th century tracery and figures.
