Summary
Fieldwalking recovered prehistoric worked flint blades and fragments of Roman, Saxon medieval and post medieval pottery. The pieces of pottery included a piece of black burnished and locally produced Middle Saxon pottery. The Middle Saxon, Late Saxon and medieval finds suggest this was an area of settlement during these periods.

February to March 1986. Hales Survey, Heckingham sites 38, 38L, 40, 40a.
Context 1. Site 40 in (S1).
Examined twice, gravelly surface.
Three medieval unglazed.
One late stoneware.
Two glazed red earthenware.
Context 2. Site 40A in (S1).
Ground cleared. Some interesting sherds collected.
One base pimply Ipswich.
Three body sherds pimply Ipswich.
One body sherd burnished Ipswich.
One body sherd probably Middle Saxon local or possibly Ipswich.
Four medieval unglazed.
One medieval unglazed or earlier.
Two Thetford types.
One late medieval/transitional.
Context 3. Context 1 of Site 38 in (S1).
Reasonable results.
Two flints: two blades, one broken at proximal end. Identified by J.J. Wymer (NAU).
Three Roman greyware.
Two rims pimply Ipswich.
Two body sherds pimply Ipswich.
One rim, burnt, probably Middle Saxon local.
