Summary

Brecks Farmhouse was built around 1800, though it has earlier ranges to the rear. This two storey building is of gault brick and has a shallow pitched hipped roof of black glazed pantiles and a cellar. It forms a group with a cartshed which was built around the same time and has an interesting timber-frame and brick construction, with unusual carpenter's marks. There is also a brick barn, half of which dates to the 18th century.

Cart shed with storey above; contains reused medieval limestone. Date around 1800 of interesting timber frame and brick construction, with unusual carpenter's marks.

Listing Description:
Breck Farm House.
House, built around 1800, with earlier ranges to rear. Gault brick. Shallow pitched hipped roof of black glazed pantiles. Three windows. Two storeys and cellar. Moulded brick cap to shallow brick plinth. Wide moulded brick cornice. Clasping brick pilasters. Sashes with glazing bars, three x three panes, stone sills, skewback flat arches. Double leaved central door, margin lights to glazed upper part. Classical doorcase: wide fluted tapering square pilasters; Roman Doric entablature. Right hand return wall rendered. Left hand return wall gault brick. Staircase outshut to rear. Interior: right hand room: marble fireplace with square pilasters; semicircular headed iron grate with cartouches to head and side incorporating bust; semicircular roller cinder grate. Roll moulded arch at rear of central bay to staircase. Open string dogleg staircase with winders, wreathed mahogany rail supported by bobbin turned newel, square sectioned wood balusters. Cellar: some flint footings, run out chamfer stops to beam. Rear: double width wing of two storeys beneath asymmetrical roof with pantiles to southwest, black glazed pantiles to northeast; north east facade continues right hand return of house, rendered brick colourwashed and scored, one door, five casements mostly of two lights, some leaded with pintle hinges. Southwest facade: pebble -flint with 17th century brick dressings. Upper wall raised in brick with coloured headers. Two cells. Central door. Three-light casements to ground floor with some leaded panes and pintle hinges. Interior: central dividing wall once external. Large paving tiles to southwest. Ogee and bar stopped chamfers to beams. Forms a group with barn and cart shed.

Barn at Breck Farm 20m northeast of Breck Farm House
Barn, 2nd half of 18th century. Brick, Flemish bond. Flint plinth to right. Pantiles. Gable parapets. Six bays, two large openings, left hand doors renewed. Ventilation slits, dentil cornice. Gables of tumbled brick with letters E A (Edward Astley, s.1760, d.1802) in iron. Left hand gable with blocked window and weather vane. Continuous outshut to rear in uncoursed flint and brick mosaic. Two main doorways. Interior: walls of coursed flint and brick mosaic. Brick above eaves level of left hand gable. Brick pilasters flanking doorways. Renewed three tier staggered purlin roof with two collars, braces to tie beams; queen struts. Three rows of staggered purlins, to outshut roof. Many moulded roof members of outshut and moulded bressumer to right hand rear doorway probably reused. Included for group value.
