Full description
Possible Roman road suggested on basis of straight roads, parish and field boundaries.
28 September 1978. Visit by E. Rose (NAU).
North end of suggested course, Backwood Lane, gives no indication of Roman date: deep ditch on east is probably a wood boundary. However section between Honeypot Lane and Heath Road is remarkably straight, where the road would have been expected to curve, and is also embanked. No obvious sign of agger where parish boundary continues, but there is thick undergrowth here. At Spot Cottage there is no agger either, but the hedgeline is very old as one would expect on a parish boundary. Long Lane has at least been a drove road; bounded by old hedges wide apart between which the modern tarmac snakes. No sign of continuation beyond south end.
E. Rose (NAU) 28 September 1978.
Source [1] states that the alignment is continued to the south by two very old hedges set a short distance apart.
E. Rose (NLA) 17 November 1999.
