Name:Roman to post-medieval finds

Summary

Metal-detecting between 1982 and 2009 recovered medieval and post-medieval pottery sherds; Roman, medieval and post-medieval brick or tile fragments; Roman, Middle Saxon, medieval and post-medieval coins; medieval and post-medieval tokens; post-medieval jettons and Roman and medieval to post-medieval metal objects. The metal finds include a Roman seal box and brooches; a medieval buckle, stud and vessel foot and a post-medieval candle snuffer. An Early Medieval Coptic bowl was also recovered from this site and it recorded under NHER 61602.

Observation of a water pipe trench recovered fragments of medieval pottery.

The cropmarks of enclosures, fields and ring ditches previously recorded under this number are now under NHER 52181-9 and 52192.

Cropmarks of at least three ring ditches, double ditched square enclosure and adjacent linear features. Appears to be of possible ?temple/Gosbecks type plan with adjacent ring ditches.

May-August 1992. Fieldwalking and Metal-Detecting Survey and Watching Brief.
Fieldwork carried out along route of Yelverton to East Carleton Gas Pipeline (Survey Blocks 209-210, the former partially within NHER 29030).
Finds recovered during initial survey include:
1 Roman brick/tile fragment.
1 medieval coin, 1 pottery sherd and 7 brick/tile fragments.
1 ?medieval copper alloy vessel foot.
1 post-medieval coin, 5 pottery sherds and 4 brick/tile fragments.
Finds from Field 3030 (to west of Survey Block 210):
1 post-medieval coin and 1 candle snuffer.
No archaeologically significant features or deposits identified during subsequent Watching Brief undertaken during topsoil stripping and excavation of pipe trench.

The finds have been deposited with the Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 1995.75).

There appears to be some form of sub circular enclosure showing up as a slight earthwork in the top right hand corner of photographs. To the north of the field boundary that bisects the site, it appears to be slight earthworks, while to the south of the boundary it is less clear and may be a soil mark.

A series of possible pre-Roman fields are recorded under NHER 52188 and the series of ring ditches are under NHER 52181-3. Any unphased or undated cropmarks are under NHER 52192.
