Summary

An evaluation was carried out here before development. An undated pit containing cow bones and a Roman spread of dark material contained in a hollow were recorded. Metal detecting on the site recovered many finds including Roman coins, an unusual Early Saxon brooch or mount and a pair of medieval horse pendants decorated with red and blue enamel and gilding.

Full description

27 March 1995. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of threatened area to north of existing workshops. Six machine dug trenches observed.
Trenches 1, 2, 5 and 6 archaeologically blank. Trench 3 interrupted northern ditch of moated site NHER 19631 to south. Trench 4 produced Roman features and pot and animal bone. Metal detecting survey largely fruitless.

The north end of Trench 4 of the March 1995 evaluation and the area around hollow [9] has been enlarged untidily by machine. The owner has agreed to backfill and level, but the area has been significantly disturbed.
