Summary

Medieval pottery recovered during fieldwalking for the Fenland Survey in 1986. A Roman coin and a large quantity of medieval to post-medieval metal objects recovered during metal-detecting between 1995 and 2012. Metal objects include a French medieval jetton, an unusual heart shaped button, and a 16th or 17th century ewer handle.

Full description

9 May 1986. Fieldwalking mixed conyos and fruit canes etc. Gaultree.
Odd medieval sherds.

Medieval jetton. See list in file. Identified by J. Davies (NCM).
Moulded human face in profile, copper alloy, ?Medieval mount fragment.
Heart shaped button, solid with integral loop. Slightly angled, each 'lobe' of heart decorated with two zones of diagonally engraved lines (4). Hatching grooved band around outside. Very unusual and beautiful. Max. thickness 6mm. medieval. See (S2).
13th century buckle, oval frame with ornate outer edge and mouldings on either side of moulded pin rest; small fragment of plate surviving. For comparisons see (S3) and (S4).
