Name:Probable medieval moat

Summary

A rectangular raised platform could be seen in the middle of this field. This is probably a medieval moat. Extensive metal detecting has recovered many medieval finds including two medieval seal matrices, one inscribed with a hare and the hunting cry SOhOV SOhOV, a seal of the Pope Innocent III, medieval pottery and medieval coins.

Full description

Winter 1982 to 1983. Found on ploughed field. [1].
Rectangular raised platform, low and ill defined, 180m east to west x 100m north to south defined by ditch on north side, present field boundary on east, scarp on south and west. Three sherds of medieval pottery, including one Grimston greenglazed found.

This is marked on the (S1) as 'moat'. The west side is shown thereon as waterfilled, the north side as ditch, south side as scarp, but no east side.
