Record Details

NHER Number:18255
Type of record:Find Spot
Name:Possible Roman settlement and multi-period finds

Summary

Fieldwalking in 1982 and metal-detecting between 1986 and 2016 recovered a large number of Roman finds, including many coins, pottery sherds, finger rings, brooches, hairpins, a weight, coin weight, cosmetic mortar, folding razor or knife handle, bracelet, mount or stud and the lid from a copper alloy flagon. The number of finds suggests this may be part of a larger Roman settlement comprising this site and NHER 18256. Other finds recovered include prehistoric worked flints; medieval pottery sherds; Late Iron Age, medieval and post-medieval coins; a medieval jetton and Iron Age/Roman and medieval to post-medieval metal objects. The metal finds include a Iron Age/Roman miniature terret and brooch; medieval to post-medieval dress accessories; a medieval cauldron fragment; a medieval/post-medieval copper alloy chafing dish, thimble and book clasp and a post-medieval crotal bell, coin weight and part of a knife.
