Name:Roman cauldron hoard and Iron Age and Roman finds

Summary

In 1974 a metal detectorist discovered a hoard of Roman cauldrons and other vessels, including a wooden handle. Subsequent metal detecting on the site has recovered an Iron Age brooch, Roman brooches, coins and pottery.

Full description

1974. Found with metal detector in peaty soil on sand, top of hoard 30cm to 38cm (12 to 15') below surface.
3 copper alloy cauldrons side by side in one a patera/strainer and cruciform handle: in the other a copper alloy bowl, containing another, which contained wooden handle, iron ladle flat handle (copper alloy), all covered with an iron pan.

Round section ring, rather better made than most rings. Decorated with 3 pairs of oblique grooves (set in herring bone fashion) on the outer face, any other decoration is obscured by corrosion. Clearly old, Roman to medieval, but otherwise not dateable. Interior diameter 19mm, exterior diameter 25mm.
