Name:Roman building and multi-period finds, Hockwold Cum Wilton

Summary

A Roman building was excavated in the early 1930s, revealing a floor surface as well as Roman building materials and roof tiles. The building is part of a complex of a dense network of Roman settlement along the edge of the Fens. A Neolithic flint scraper, an Iron Age silver coin, Roman coins, pottery, brooches and metal finds including a terret, possible bucket escutcheon and a statuette of Mercury have been found on the site, as well as an Early Saxon brooch and a Late Saxon bead.

1930 to 33.
Discovery of Roman building, excavated 1931.
Coins, pottery (S1) and figurine found, also Neolithic scraper.

1974. Found with metal detecting.
Roman brooch (S2) and a possible copper alloy bucket escutcheon (S3) and an Early Saxon brooch (S4).

1976. Found with metal detecting.
Iron Age coin, Roman figurine (S5) and terret (S6).

1980. Found with metal detecting.
Roman palette (S7) and Early Saxon brooch.

1982.
