Record Details

NHER Number:41681
Type of record:Monument
Name:Probable Bronze Age round barrow or mound associated with a quarry

Summary

In 1997 a small mound was noted on this site, with a clear ditch and bank to the northern side. It could be the remains of a Bronze Age round barrow or associated with the quarry to the southwest. The fact that the ditch and bank would appear to post-date a probable post-medieval bank and/or road (NHER 5002) would suggest the latter.

Full description

8 December 1997. Visited by D. Gurney (NLA).
Small mound, as noted, with clear ditch and bank on the north side.
Small trees on mound recently felled, except for one.
D. Gurney (NLA), 9 December 1997.

Formerly recorded erroneously under NHER 25487, which is nearby.

May 2005. No change since 1997.
D. Gurney (NLA), 11 May 2005.

April 2008. Field visit and meeting to consider management and interpretation.
Possibly a Bronze Age barrow, although it could be a landscape feature.
D. Robertson (NLA), 9 May 2008.

July 2013. Field visit.
The mound is very similar in appearance to earthworks associated with the large quarry to the southwest (NHER 41681). As a result, it is high likely it is a quarrying feature rather than a burial mound.
D. Robertson (HES), 14 August 2013.

September 2016. 'Brecks from Above' and Breckland National Mapping Programme.
The earthworks of this previously recorded mound are clearly visible on the Lidar data (S1) [1]. The relationship of this mound with the probable post-medieval bank and/or road to the north (NHER 5002) would suggest that it is not prehistoric barrow, as the ditch seems to cut into this feature, and a slight upcast bank following the line of the ditch, appears to sit upon it. Although this would need to be checked on the ground.
S. Horlock (Norfolk Historic Environment Service), 21 September 2016.
