Type of record:Monument
Name:Babingley deserted medieval settlement and multi-period finds

Summary

The site of the medieval settlement of Babingley, lying to the north of an area of reclaimed marshland which was at one time a navigable estuary about 3km inland from the Wash. The visible remains include part of a moated site of a medieval manor house, now Hall Farm, trackways, enclosures, an adjoining arable field system and a second smaller moated site, possibly once containing a dovecote. About 200m to the west of the remains of the village and standing isolated in farmland are the overgrown ruins of the Church of St Felix. The remains date to the 14th century and later, but may be on the site of an earlier church, as there is a tradition that it was here that St Felix of Burgundy landed in A.D. 631 on his mission to convert the East Angles to Christianity. Saxon pottery fragments found in the area certainly suggest a pre-Conquest settlement.

Metal-detecting between 2003 and 2015 recovered prehistoric worked flint; Roman, Middle Saxon, Late Saxon, Late Saxon to post-medieval, medieval and post-medieval pottery sherds; Roman roof tile fragments; medieval roof and floor tile fragments; Roman and medieval to post-medieval coins; medieval to post-medieval jettons and tokens and Roman to post-medieval metal objects. The metal objects include a Roman/Early Saxon buckle frame; a Middle Saxon copper alloy workbox (?reliquary), stylus and key; Middle-Late Saxon strap-ends and hooked tags, a Middle Saxon to medieval hooked tag; a Late Saxon staff terminal, finger/ear ring, mount and lead strap-end; medieval to post-medieval dress accessories; medieval thimbles, a harness pendant, casket key, ampulla and lead seal matrix; a medieval/post-medieval silver couching needle or 'lawyers bodkin', copper alloy vessel handle loop, purse frame, lead weight, copper alloy ring, half of a copper alloy strainer and a coin weight and a post-medieval harness mount, furniture escutcheon plate fragment and spoon.
