Summary

Extensive metal detecting in this area during 1994-2003 recovered a large number of metal objects, coins and pottery sherds. Finds included a scattered hoard of 342 medieval pennies, a medieval gilded copper alloy ring brooch, Early Saxon brooches and a grooved bronze knob terminal from the bar of a locking medieval buckle.

Full description

23 to 30 April 1994. Metal detecting.
Context 2: Scattered hoard of 334 Long Cross pennies at [1].
Found by [2].
Declared Treasure Trove April 1995.

Site visit by A. Rogerson (NLA) 20 May 1994. Area measured.
Maximum spread of coins 12.2m x 12.2m (40ft x 40ft), most within 6.1m x 6.1m (20ft x 20ft). Depth 1.3cm to 33cm (0.5in to 13ins).
Ploughsoil dug over and detected in inner area.
Sandy gravel natural.
No features seen.
Centre of inner area is 18.20m west of east hedge. 66.30m north from south hedge.
Scatter of medieval sherds along south edge, also Late Saxon and Roman, further details to follow.

Grooved bronze knob terminal from bar of locking buckle. medieval.
Medieval, probably 14th century, gilded copper alloy ring brooch with narrowing for pin attachment. Collar on pin near loop. Ring decorated with twenty-five ribs, each consisting of filigree pellets. Diameter 15.5mm.To be photographed.
