Square bezel set with red stone (?garnet) en cabochon. Decoration on 'chamfered' bezel in form of leaf scrolls inlaid with traces of niello or black enamel; decoration in form of cross hatching on shoulders, 12th century. Ribbed flange where hoop joins bezel on each side. Cross-hatching on shoulders is very fine, and there is a dot in each lozenge formed by crosshatching. Bezel has acanthus leaf in centre of each side, and pairs of leaves on each corner. The acanthus and the cross hatching on the shoulders suggest 'Romanesque' period. John Cherry confirms dating (18 June 1992). Identified by E.B. Green (NCM).
