Name:Roman rubbish pits and multi-period finds, Luddington's Gravel Pit

Summary

In the 1930s pottery and flint implements from the Early Bronze Age, as well as pottery sherds from the Iron Age and Roman period were discovered during gravel extraction. In the early 1950s the gravel pit was extended and several Roman rubbish pits full of Roman pottery sherds were recorded.

Full description

1936. Luddington's Gravel Pit.
Workmen digging out a huge tree stump exposed fragments of Bronze Age pottery and some Early Bronze Age flint flakes. Further fragments of pot were found during digging and sifting on the site.

1936.
Much Roman pot was recovered from the site.

1938.
Pieces of Iron Age pot were recovered.

1939.
Half a Beaker period pot and other peieces of Beaker period pot were recovered.

1950. New gravel pit includes the area of above.
3rd and 4th century Roman pottery was found on the tips.

1952.
Roman pottery in quantity was found north of Hams Wood in refuse pits by R.R. Clarke (NCM).

This record was related to NHER 2412 and NHER 2409 as modern maps show Luddington's Gravel pit extends further than the polygon for this record indicates.
