Name:Brampton Piece Roman and Iron Age site, Bolwick

Summary

Excavations here between 1939 and 1956 found evidence for an Iron Age rectangular enclosure and associated settlement, Roman buildings, drainage ditches and a lime kiln dating to between the 2nd and 3rd century AD. The Roman buildings were systematically pulled down in the 4th century. These features can be seen on aerial photographs of the area. The site has now been scheduled. Metal detecting with permission on the site has recovered many Roman coins, brooches and metal working scrap. Saxon, medieval and post medieval finds were also recovered.
