NHER Number:4530
Type of record:Find Spot
Name:Multi-period finds, Toot Hill

Summary

Between 1911 and 2014 numerous finds of Mesolithic to post-medieval date have been recovered by chance and as a result of fieldwalking and metal-detecting in the area of Toot Hill. Notable prehistoric finds include Mesolithic flint blade cores and blade, a Mesolithic/Early Neolithic blade core and part of a Neolithic flaked axe. Large numbers of Roman finds have also been recovered including coins, coin blanks, bracelets and brooches. Later finds include Middle Saxon, Late Saxon and medieval pottery sherds; Late Saxon and medieval coins; a medieval jetton; an Early Saxon brooch and pendant; a Middle Saxon gold pendant; a Late Saxon earring and finger ring; a Late Roman/Early Saxon belt stiffener; medieval dress accessories, brooches, a finger ring and a harness fitting and a post-medieval book clasp and a needle. See NHER 58855 for discussion of the possibility that a Bronze Age barrow was once present on Toot Hill.

Full description

Numerous finds recovered by chance and as a result of fieldwalking and metal-detecting in the area of Toot Hill. It has been suggested that this may have been the site of a Bronze Age barrow - see NHER 5855 for further details.

Pre 1915. Stray Finds.
The Norwich Castle Museum holds a mixed collection of finds that was bequethed by Rev. R. C. Nightingale (NWHCM : 1915.73), most, if not all of which are believed to have been found in Beachamwell. Although the bulk of this collection lacks any additional information regarding provenance, 2 small blades cores of probable Mesolithic date are marked as being from Toot Hill. It is therefore possible that at least some of the unprovenanced Mesolithic in this collection was also from this site (see NHER 4520 for further details).

Pre 1920. Stray Finds.
A private collection, seen for the first time in 2010, contains 3 flint artefacts found by H. Clarke at Toot Hill, most likely between 1911 and 1914. The collection comprises 28 artefacts, most of which lack precise provenance. The flints from Toot Hill are:
1 Late Mesolithic single-platform micro-blade core.
1 Neolithic scraper.
1 undatable prehistoric retouched flake.
For full descriptions see secondary file for NHER 55437 (which details the bulk of this collection).

The Norwich Castle Museum holds a large number of objects that were found by a H. W. Clarke in the Beachamwell area (NWHCM : 1918.32 : A). These were almost certainly found by the same individual, particularly as an Eastern Daily Press article from 1918 states that all of the material donated to the NCM came from Toot Hill. See NHER 14552 for further information on these finds.

The NCM's H. Apling collection also includes a number of flints from Toot Hill (NWHCM : 1977.124.17). These finds are recorded by (S6) as being "ex Clarke Collection" and are listed in the museum's records as:
