Summary

Extensive metal-detecting 1994 and 2018 recovered late prehistoric worked flint; an Early Bronze Age, Iron Age and medieval to post-medieval pottery sherds; Iron Age, Middle Saxon, Roman, medieval and post-medieval coins and Early Bronze Age, Roman, Early Saxon and medieval to post-medieval metal objects. The metal finds include an unusual copper alloy Bronze Age awl; Roman brooches; Early Saxon brooches, wrist clasp fragments, a buckle frame and ?gusset plate fragment; a Middle Saxon brooch; a Late Saxon stirrup terminal; medieval to post-medieval dress accessories; medieval casket keys, seal matrices, a horse harness fitting, thimble, copper alloy vessel fragment and annular brooch; medieval/post-medieval purse bar fragment and a post-medieval cloth seal, thimble, spur terminal and toy cannon.
The quantity and type of Early Saxon objects recovered suggests that this is the site of an Early Saxon cemetery.

2) Four medieval coins, one medieval and one post-medieval token. See list in file.
3) 13th century silver ring brooch fragment with two brambled bosses.
4) Two tiny medieval casket keys.
5) Late medieval double-looped buckle, rectangular, one loop broken, grooved projecting pin-rest.
6) Late medieval double-looped rectangular buckle with zones of engraved lines on frame
7) Two early post-medieval hooked tags: one with circular plate in form of low relief rosette, broken hook, rectangular attachment loop :other with 'bud' or fruit in centre surrounded by openwork foliage with rectangular attachment loop.
8) Early post-medieval buckle.

1) Two Dolphin brooches, 1st century AD: one with spring mechanism; other with hinge mechanism, tinned or silvered.
2) 12th/13th century lead seal matrix, broken lug on edge. Octofoil 'rosette' in centre S' WILL'---W: he---.
3) Late medieval purse bar fragment engraved with cross-hatched niello inlaid lines.

Foot of Early Saxon cruciform brooch, strongly splayed terminal, moderately pronounced eyes, transverse ribbing. Oldish break. All surfaces rather smooth and shiny. ?Tinned or silvered.

Roman Dolphin brooch with hinge mechanism. The wings are 33mm long and tubular with a seam along the reverse. They enclose an iron axis bar on which a near complete copper alloy pin is corroded. The whole brooch is very worn, but there are traces of vertical decoration on the wings and two grooves down the bow. The bow tapers to a pointed foot, now bent. Remains of catchplate on reverse. 1st century AD.
