Record Details

NHER Number:30867
Type of record:Monument
Name:Probable Roman settlement, Early Saxon inhumation cemetery and multi-period finds

Summary

Metal detecting has recovered a wide range of objects, the earliest of which are a Bronze Age spearhead and an Iron Age coin. A large number of Roman metal finds suggests that there was a Roman settlement on the site; this is evidenced by over 400 Roman coins, numerous brooches, a pin, a finger ring and five bracelets. Early Saxon metal artefacts, including ten brooches, a sword chape, part of two girdle hangers and fragments of three wrist clasps, suggest that the site was also probably an inhumation cemetery. Middle Saxon finds include pins and a brooch. Late Saxon finds include coins, strap ends, a belt fitting and a disc brooch. Medieval and post medieval metalwork finds include coins, tokens and German and French jettons.
