Full description

Moat (Ordnance Survey).
The northern side of the moat as represented on (S1) still remains in a ploughed field, dry and overgrown, about 2.1m deep and 4.5m wide.
However it now runs into the pit marked to the southwest: it is not possible to tell if this was originally a part of it.
The southern edge of the field has had houses built over it.
An older row of cottages to the east is called West Hall Cottages, suggesting this is the identification of the site.
Visited E. Rose (NAU) 17 February 1977.

(S2) calls field West Hall, but shows only waterfilled parts of moat, the dry sections are depicted as field boundary.
No other early maps.
E. Rose (NLA) 18 December 1990.

Earthwork survey in file.
See (S3).
R. J. Rickett (NAU) 16 March 1990

19 December 1995. Site visit.
Brief inspection revealed no obvious change.
Site very overgrown, having been unmanaged for 10 to 12 years.
Bought as potential development land, but outside village development area in Local Plan (Deposit Version, June 1994).
D. Gurney (NLA) 19 December 1995.

2000.
Extensive clearance over whole area of moat and surrounding field.
Trees uprooted, moat sides scoured.
Tracks of tracked vehicles throughout with considerable disturbance of turf.
No building debris or other artefacts noted in tree roots or disturbed soil, except for a small quantity of modern brick on east side of east arm.
H. Paterson (A&E) 31 January 2000
