Type of record:Monument
Name:Medieval settlement and multi-period finds

Summary

Fieldwalking in 1988 as part of the Fenland Survey recovered pieces of medieval pottery, shell, bone and prehistoric worked and burnt flints. Fieldwalking and metal-detecting between 1993 and 2020 recovered Roman, medieval and post-medieval coins; medieval and post-medieval jettons, post-medieval tokens, as well as Late Bronze Age, Roman and Middle Saxon to post-medieval metal objects. The metal finds include part of a Late Bronze Age chisel; Roman brooches, a finger ring and a bead; an incomplete Middle Saxon strap end; a Late Saxon harness fitting; a Late Saxon to post-medieval spindle whorl; medieval to post-medieval dress accessories; medieval keys, thimbles, brooches, keys, an ampulla, cauldron fragment, seal matrix and padlock; a medieval/post-medieval spindle whorl, bell, spur fragment and lead weight and a post-medieval, crotal bell, ferrule, pair of dividers and a sword belt or strap fitting.
The large number of medieval finds suggest that this was the location of medieval settlement adjacent to the Narborough and Swaffham road.
