Full description

5 and 11 March 1985. Fieldwalking, weed covered with occasional bare patch.
Line of Downham Market Southern Bypass.
Context 1: general scatter. Prehistoric gritty sherd, 2 medieval unglazed sherds (one uncertain).

25 April 1985. Context 2 and context 3 within context 1.
Context 2: pit cut by roadside ditch on north side of road-line, on north edge of ditch 90.2m from west hedge of field. Topsoil partly removed and disturbed but surface of natural (gravely soil with dark 'pebble' lenses) more or less intact.
Pit 0.7m east to west cut 0.30m into natural, and minimum 0.4m north to south.
Lower fill max depth 0.1m of very dark grey sand, with little charcoal, some lumps burnt sandstone and fire cracked flints (not white crazed pot boilers) and some unmodified flint nodules; extends as thin layer up sides to base of topsoil.
Upper filling in centre of yellowish brown slightly gravelly soil.
Sides of pit relatively vertical, not burnt.
All finds from lower fill.
No section drawn, surviving fill all excavated.
Finds: Beaker pottery, four flints, 2 hazel? nut shells.
Context 3: on south side ditch, 88m from west hedge.
Fragment of lowest filling of pit 0.5m deep.
Very dark grey sand, no finds.
