Name:Possible medieval watermill site

Summary

This may the site of a medieval watermill. A rectangular enclosure, perhaps drainage ditches, can be seen on aerial photographs of the area. Survey carried out here recovered Middle and Late Saxon pottery and some hearth lining with iron slag attached to it.

Full description

Winter 1983 to 1984. 250m east of Manor Farm.
Found in both banks of stream in area about 50m east to west.
Four sherds of fine sandy Ipswich ware including one spouted pitcher rim.
Two sherds of Thetford type and one fragment of fired clay furnace lining with iron slag adhering.
Referred to as 'the mill site'.

Shows a rectangular earthwork around this site, part of the general layout of NHER 17436. Is this the site of the 'mill'?

Rectangular enclosure could be either drainage ditches on south side of stream or scarped enclosure on north side, shown on earthwork plan of NHER 17436 (see that file). Stream now has small dam and pond in vicinity - also shown on above plan.
