Record Details

NHER Number:19640
Type of record:Monument
Name:Early Saxon cremations and multi-period finds

Fieldwalking and metal-detecting between 1982 and 2014 recovered prehistoric worked flints; undated, Iron Age, Roman, Early Saxon, medieval and post-medieval pottery sherds; a medieval roof tile fragment; a medieval/post-medieval token and undated and Early Saxon to post-medieval metal objects. The metal finds include undated metalworking debris; a number of Early Saxon brooches and a sleeve clasp; a Middle/Late Saxon hooked tag; medieval to post-medieval dress accessories; a medieval needle and book clasp and a medieval/post-medieval copper alloy vessel foot and leg.
The number of Early Saxon brooches and pottery fragments found on this site suggests that the Early Saxon cremation cemetery, NHER 3781, extends into this area.
